Join 2017 Farmleigh Writer-in-Residence Mia Gallagher for a unique event – an evening of song, words and images which will celebrate and expose the intimate yet often strangely troubled realm of family, home and domestic life. The event will feature some of Ireland’s best loved writers and artists, including the marvellous John Boyne (author of the international bestseller The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas), renowned novelist and poet Nuala O’Connor (author of the International DUBLIN-longlisted Miss Emily), singer-songwriter extraordinaire Sean Millar and award-winning visual artist Maeve McCarthy.

Prepare to be provoked, entertained and inspired as these wonderful artists share their work, insights and observations. The first part of the evening will feature readings, music and film. This will be followed by a lively discussion with all the artists, moderated by Mia.

More on the artists

John Boyne is the author of 10 novels for adults, 5 for younger readers and a collection of short stories. His 2006 novel, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, sold more than 9 million copies worldwide and was adapted for film, theatre and ballet. His most recent novel is The Heart’s Invisible Furies. His books are published in over 50 languages.

Maeve McCarthy is a member of the RHA and has exhibited widely in Ireland and internationally. She is known for her small scale rural nighttime landscapes, rich with ideas of place and home, leaving, longing and returning. Awards include the Irish-US Council for Commerce & Industry Portrait prize, RHA (2006) and the Don Niccolo D’Ardia Carraciolo Award, RHA (1995,2004) and n 2005, she was commissioned to paint a portrait of Maeve Binchy for The National Portrait Gallery (National Gallery of Ireland). Her most recent exhibition The Return (RHA Ashford Gallery, 2016) was praised as ‘immensely atmospheric’ by the Irish Times.

Sean Millar is an acclaimed musician, performer and composer. His solo albums regularly feature on Best Of lists and he has been lauded by the Irish Times as “Ireland’s greatest lyricist”. He has toured widely across Europe, the US and Canada, and his songs have been interpreted by Jack L, Gavin Friday and Camille O’Sullivan. He has also gained international acclaim as a composer for theatre, where his work includes the award-winning The Blue Boy and Silver Stars.

Nuala O’Connor AKA Nuala Ní Chonchúir was born in Dublin and lives in East Galway. Her fifth short story collection Joyride to Jupiter appears from New Island in June 2017. Penguin USA, Penguin Canada and Sandstone (UK) published Nuala’s third novel, Miss Emily, about the poet Emily Dickinson and her Irish maid. Miss Emily was shortlisted for the Bord Gáis Energy Eason Book Club Novel of the Year 2015 and longlisted for the 2017 International DUBLIN Literary Award. Nuala’s fourth novel, Becoming Belle, will be published in 2018.

Mia Gallagher is the author of two acclaimed novels – HellFire (Penguin, 2006) and Beautiful Pictures of the Lost Homeland (New Island, 2016). Her award-winning short fiction has been internationally published and anthologised and she is now working on a collection of stories for next year. Recently awarded a Literature Bursary to develop a new novel, Mia was guest-editor of the Stinging Fly’s Winter 2016/2017 issue Fear & Fantasy, and is now one of the Stinging Fly’s new contributing editors. Mia has also written and performed professionally for the stage.
